About ISO files

What are ISO image files and how do I use them?

Many products are posted as ISO-9660 image files. An ISO-9660 image file is an exact representation of a CD, including the content and the logical format. The most common use of an image file is to write it to a blank CD-R resulting in an identical copy of the original CD including file name and volume label information. ISO image files may also be opened and their contents copied to a local folder, much like ZIP files. ISO files may also be virtually mounted and accessed as a CD-ROM device. These ... methods of using ISO images are described below.

Installation

How you install depends on which file you choose as well as your computer hardware. There are three possibilities:

Installing 'without' a cue sheet

Step 1. Download the "game" image above.

Step 2. Open your cd writing software (any competent program will work), and on the File menu select "Record Disk from Image".

Note. The exact wording may vary from program to program.

Step 3. From the open dialog box, make sure you select ISO file type.

Step 4. Select the file you downloaded.

Step 5. Click Open.

Step 6. Confirm Record Setup.

Note. Setup options may vary from program to program.

Step 7. Your program should let you know when recording is finished.

Step 8. Viewed in windows explorer, the disk contents should look like this.

Step 9. Click "setup.exe" to install.

Step 10. When you're finished, remove the disk from the drive and label it using a proper felt tip pen, then store it in a safe place. For best care, use a proper cd case.

Installing with a cue sheet

Step 1. Download the "disk" image AND the "cue" file above.

Important. Copy both to the same folder.

Step 2. Obtain and install a copy of Nero CD/DVD burning software.

Important. Nero is currently the only program that handles disk images of this type. You MUST use nero for the disk image.

Note. A free 30 day demo is available.

Step 3. Open Nero Burning ROM, and on the Recorder menu select Burn Image.

Note 1. If you have the demo, click past the nag prompts.
Note 2. Nero uses what they call a StartSmart screen. Close it, and open Nero Burning ROM directly from the menu. If you're bent on the StartSmart menu then select CD, then mouseover the Copy and Backup icon, and then select Burn Image to Disk from the options. If you do this, then Nero Burning ROM will open automatically.

Step 4. Browse to and select the CUE file you downloaded.

Step 5. Click Open.

Step 6. Click Burn at the Burn Compilation prompt.

Step 7. You will be prompted when the disk is complete.

Step 8. Viewed in windows explorer, the disk contents should look like this.

Step 9. Click "setup.exe" to install.

Step 10. When you're finished, remove the disk from the drive and label it using a proper felt tip pen, then store it in a safe place. For best care, use a proper cd case.

Installing without a CD-R

Step 1. Download the "game" or "disk" image files above.

Step 2. Obtain and install a copy of Daemon Tools virtual cd/dvd-rom emulator.

Note 1. The emulator should install with one active disk enabled. If not, then, in the system tray, right click the Daemon Tools icon > virtual cd/dvd-rom > Set number of devices > 1 drive
Note 2. The exact drive letter will vary from computer to computer.

Step 3. In the system tray, right click the Daemon Tools icon > virtual cd/dvd-rom > Device 0 [N:] No media > Mount image.

Step 4. Browse to and select the image you downloaded (MTM2.ISO or MTM2disk.cue).

Step 5. Click Open.

Note. There is no burn process. The game or disk image is ready to use.

Step 6. Viewed in windows explorer, the virtual cd drive contents should look like this.

Note. You should see the iso contents as if it was a real cd rom drive.

Step 7. Click "setup.exe" to install.

Step 8. When you're finished, in the system tray, right click the Daemon Tools icon > virtual cd/dvd-rom > unmount all drives.

Note 1. If you wish, you can uninstall Daemon tools after mtm2 is installed
Note 2. Extra notes on Demon Tools can be found here.
Note 3. Microsoft also offers an unsupported Virtual CD-ROM Control Panel for Windows XP on the MSDN site. I have not tried it but have no reason to believe it does not work.
Note 4. You can use winrar to unzip an iso file in the same way as you open a zip or rar file.
